Utterly wonderful. Hilarious. Sterling writing. Reminds me of a preacher I once heard who had the congregation laughing all the way through and then leveled them with a one-liner. This may be a bit misleading, but the author delivers her premise and, I suspect, her philosophy, in rollicking language and development. I read the less favorable reviews and believe those speak more to the readers than to the work. Ms. Wall is a terrific writer. I wish she had more novels. I first read The Wilde Women and then ordered this because I love her sly social commentary, her facility with stylistically stringing words together. I think she likely has lots of fun writing, and her intelligence shows.

This is not normally the kind of book I would choose, but it jumped from the library shelf into my arms after I opened it and read a line or two. The author cannot just write; she can paint phrases on a page that are both profound and funny enough to make you laugh aloud. To the point of tears in a few spots. Good story, many surprises, good ending. If I could write like Paula Wall I could better express how much I enjoyed her writing as well as the story she told.
This is a very interesting first novel and story. I read her second novel and then ordered the first one. I'd read her again. It was a good read and not heavy - one of those great "snack books" that you read in between something heavy. I enjoyed it and have passed it on to several friends.
Don't start this book until you have some time because to say it's hard to put down is a definite understatement. What a laugh riot. People around me kept asking me what I was laughing about ....The Belle girls, the town minister, the town doctor...all have quirky ideas and each one becomes a real person ......I loved all the characters....well almost all. If you want to really enjoy a good book.....this is the one. If you're from the South....well...that will just make it even more fun. the only way it could have been more fun ....if I had been sitting on the beach reading.
I was new to Paula Wall's work, but I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Ms. Wall's narrative is wicked fast and utterly engaging. Come to think of it, so are her characters. That said, there is no hint of shallowness or taking the easy way out. Her characters are just that...characters, true to themselves and therefore intoxicatingly easy to believe in. Their observations about life, love, sex, religion, men and women ring true and will stay with you long after you've raced through the book. I was so impressed, I ran out and paid waaay too much for her second book, Wilde Women, which is also excellent. (Hint Buy it from and save yourself some money, but by all means, buy it, read it and enjoy.)
If you enjoy a small southern town full of 3 dimensional characters, you will love this book. You’ll find yourself rooting for each character’s own happy ending and you won’t want the book to end. Filled with southern idioms, it still comes off as if their form of wisdom is something us “Yankees” lack. Profoundly simple and a feel good read. Wish there was a sequel
I have just returned from a vacation where I had the chance to read Paula Wall's new book. On the plane, I was laughing out loud, and on the beach I was laughing out loud and at both places, my fellow travelers were looking at me like I might be a little strange. The characters in this book are wonderful, and the "truism" phrases had to have been passed down to Paula via her grandmother. They are so truely southern, only a real Dixie Belle would have been familiar with them. Being a somewhat tarnished southern belle myself, I loved them all. I think someone in Hollywood should snatch this book up for a movie. I can just see those quirky characters up on the big screen. I have now passed this book along to my new southern belle daughter-in-law and hope she enjoys it as much as I did. I just loved it!!!!
Reading Paula Wall's debut novel, The Rock Orchard, is akin to sitting down to a Sunday dinner with Southern fried chicken, corn on the cob, sliced tomatoes and `nana puddin' for dessert.

The Belle women, Musette, Charlotte, Angela and Dixie Cup, of Leaper's Fork, Tennessee, are at first glimpse, an odd family of enormously rich, freethinking and determined females. Stunningly beautiful, they tend to be the frosting on every man's desirability cake.

The ultra-strong Charlotte and Angela Belle are both surrounded throughout by an array of memorable characters that provide both texture and flavor and move the plot along at atypically Southern speed.

The Yankee doctor, Adam Montgomery, has chosen medicine for all the wrong reasons and sets up practice in Leaper's Fork hoping to be a big fish in a little pond. The beautiful Lydia is his vacuous trophy wife.

Widowed Baptist preacher, Thomas Jones, comes to town to replace the hellfire and brimstone spouting Reverend Lyle. Disillusioned with life, apathetic Thomas walks around like a corpse until he sets eyes on Charlotte Belle. Before he can recite the Ten Commandments, his charisma peaks along with his libido and the church pews begin to fill.

Boone Dickson, the handsome young Jack-of-all-trades, is dirt poor and hails from the wrong side of town. He is blessed (or cursed) with an enigmatic animal magnetism that ultimately lands him a welcomed spot inside the good doctor's mansion, if only in the closet.

Throughout the book, Wall deftly strings together complete opposites. The rich and poor, black and white, good and evil, even holier-than-thou and cynical non-believers. Wondering how these characters can possibly blend, will keep you turning pages.

It is a beautifully written book by a serious writer who knows when to inject a line or two of humor, when to take her characters down a notch or two or snatch `em bald-headed. Wall is adept at lacing plot and characters together so that the story comes out just right.

The Rock Orchard is indeed comparable to Sunday dinner in the South. While you perceive a variety of textures and tastes awaiting your palate, you somehow intuit that, by the end of the meal, every morsel will have gone down as easy as cornbread and buttermilk.
