I enjoyed this study of female relationships and their psyches. Reading some of the reviews, i realized that many do not understand that up to the 1960s, women needed to marry or they became a horrifyingly lonely spinster, a childless fate worse than death to many. This is an easy read, a reminder of what life was like for young women in 1928 and what its like for some now, ie the critical mother and how to escape or not the damage she inflicts...Not a great book but a pleasant enough read.Tags : East of the Sun: A Novel [Julia Gregson] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. I love this story and the history it described. The author did a wonderful job of bringing that period in British and Indian history to life while still being true to the characters.
Late 1920s English girls in India just before the storm. Easily bored when no immediate connection made to protagonist. Always looked forward to peeking into the lives of three young and naive girls making their way to adulthood in a foreign landscape...looked forward to resuming this read!
I truly loved this book and still think of the characters long after I've finished the story. The three women involved are fully developed and become almost real to the reader, I really cared what happened to them. The setting is exotic India in the last days of the Raj and I learned a bit of history along the way. It's a book I didn't want to end.
Really did enjoy this story. I've read some reviews of her other books that said they were a bit too graphic in describing the details of war. Not the case here since there is no war in this time period. There is a situation that developes that could follow that pattern but it doesn't and certainly not a depressing story. The story is well developed with characters that are multi layered. I learned a lot about living in India as a Brit besides the personal stories.
I can't say enough good things about this book. It held my interest from start to finish. Set in India in the 1920s, three highly likable women form a friendship that takes them through difficult times. It has romance and adventure plus wonderful detail about how life was lived . Refered to as the Fishing Fleet(women looking for husbands) it was much more. I recommend it highly.
I just finished re-reading East of the Sun - historical romance novel set in 1920s India. You know a book is good when you want to re-read it a year after buying! It is the story of 3 women on the "fishing fleet" who are fishing for husbands in British Indian in a time of changing gender roles and rising Indian independence.
It gave a good feel of what it was like being a woman in India and Britain in those times. And the characters grow in many ways. Recommended
The writing is exquisite ! The story held my attention! I was so pleased to find a well written book with a great story and (spoiler alert) a happy ending . I'm tired of reading books that basically do not have a story. So many books today seem to want to delve into the psyche with no point at all. Great read.
